CLEA AND PHEASANT DANGER: WHY SHE'S WONDER WOMAN'S NATURAL ENEMY!

By Edgar Miraculous Dyer For a chick, with a turkey on her head,  Queen Clea  is one of Wonder Woman's nastier, more implacable, World War II foes and  could easily be her  Kurgan  ..or the  Ming the Merciless,  she needs to define her, the way Luthor or Loki define their superheroic adversaries. Wonder Woman - Princess Diana of the Amazons -  whom I've always argued is more  Flas h Gor don 's narrative cousin, than  Superman 's,  needs  a Ming, and she's never had one around, long enough to matter. By comparison, her other foils -  Cheetah, Warmaster  and  Grail  - seem to do little more than challenge Diana's athleticism. Diana is the daughter of a liberated nation of classical Amazons, mythical freedom-fighters, for whom love and freedom are literally a religion, ..and her archenemy should reflect that. Conceivably, Diana, who fought Nazis in World War II, should have a tyrant in her rogues gallery, who r...

WHY MYRINA BLACK IS THE GREATEST WONDER WOMAN VILLAIN...NEVER!

By Mel Dyer "Myrina, a queen of the Amazons. According to Diodorus Siculus,[1] she led a military expedition in Libya and won a victory over the people known as the Atlantians, destroying their city Cerne; but was less successful fighting the Gorgons (who are described by Diodorus as a warlike nation residing in close proximity to the Atlantians), failing to burn down their forests. During a later campaign, she struck a treaty of peace with Horus, ruler of Egypt, conquered several peoples, including the Syrians, the Arabians, and the Cilicians (but granted freedom to those of the latter who gave in to her of their own will). She also took possession of Greater Phrygia, from the Taurus Mountains to the Caicus River, and several Aegean islands, including Lesbos; she was also said to be the first to land on the previously uninhabited island which she named Samothrace, building the temple there. The cities of Myrina (in Lemnos),[2] possibly another Myrina in Mysia, Mytilene, Cyme, P...

A RASH ON MY TITANS (AND IT SMARTS)...STARRING WONDER WOMAN!

By Mel Dyer Sometimes, I don't understand the logic behind writing Wonder Woman, anymore. How this comic can continue to ignore one of its own greatest antagonists, the quasi-mystical, cybernetic mastermind, Doctor Cyber, in an age of internet, virtual reality and artificial intelligence, just ..ASTOUNDS me! At what point are the myth and magic and pretensions to classicism in the Wonder Woman comic, overkill ..or missing the mark? UPDATE: Things are changing, in the pages of Wonder Woman... HAPPILY EVER AFTERWORLDS: CONRAD, CLOONAN, MOORE AND THE SECOND GOLDEN AGE OF WONDER WOMAN (wondabunga.blogspot.com) It's the Information Age, and writer, after writer, consigns Wonder Woman to hack her way through one column of witches and krakens, after another! Has anyone on Wonder Woman 's creative team seen the Terminator films of the late 80s or the Resident Evil films, which have been so immensely popular in recent years? Can leaving zombie-creating, Boba Fett'ish, b...

NAKED WITH BUCK ROGERS: WONDER WOMAN, PULP FICTION AND THE NEW 52!

By Mel Dyer I think one of the reasons that it's so hard for modern writers to get  Wonder Woman  right, today, is because the genre of fiction that  Wonder Woman  creator,  William Moulton Marston,  crafted her from - adventure fiction or pulp fiction - is not, as common, in popular literature and film, as it used to be. I also think Cliff Chiang and Brian Azzarello, during DC Comics'  'New 52'  publishing event, came very close to rebooting the  Wonder Woman  comic to its roots, ..and I'll try to articulate why I do. Conceptually, Wonder Woman seems a much closer cousin to the heroes of  John Carter Of Mars, Buck Rogers, Doc Savage, Flash Gordon, Scorchy Smith, The Phantom, Jungle Jim, Hawkman, Doc Strange  and  Mandrake the Magician,  than she'll ever be to  Superman  and  Batman  ..or even to television's  Xena.  The problem with writing  Wonder Woman  is that most modern wr...

ONCE UPON A TIME...WONDER WOMAN AND ORION

By Mel Dyer I think it's a shame that Geoff Johns didn't give an Orion/Diana partnership, a chance.   Conceptually, this worked for me, better than the stale Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor sandwich that we fans have been choking on, since comic's Golden Age ... Sty-ana? In  Brian Azzarello's  hands (for fans, certainly not the most trusted hands, at the time he was writing  Wonder Woman ), Orion was Willie Garvin to Diana's Modesty Blaise, who (btw) is also a Greek princess...nothing overtly sexual, between them. We don't really know, if they're boinking. Like Diana and Orion, they're  companions  - does it matter, if they're messing around?   Let people use their bloody imaginations... If we still  have  those. Wonder Woman meets Orion, in DC Comics' New 52 experiment! (Cliff Chiang art) The friendship between the Amazing Amazon and Jack 'King' Kirby's  New Gods  hero, Orion, started with a guardrail orientation of how to tr...

Anyway, kangaliers... Danny's All Star Joint. Want to KNOW WONDER WOMAN, the way I know Wonder Woman? You've got to get ALL THE WAY down to the...   STAR-SPANGLED PANTIES! Edgar Miraculous (Mel) Dyer, without his fine, coyote-hatin' Goldiweiller, Kirby (now moved on to that big, coyote-hatin' hate group in the Sky) continues a somewhat bleaker, dogless existence in the Capitol Hill area of Washington, DC. He has been an active member of the Latino Culture Council of the Capitol Area (El Consejo de Cultura Latina – La Zona del Capitolio) and the Kiwanis Club of Capitol Hill.
